When your work isn’t cherished, you don’t feel the motivation to perform to the best of your abilities. But it is actually quite difficult to keep your managers happy and satisfied with your performance.

The moment you talk ill about a colleague or your team, you are putting the manager in a precarious situation. If he agrees with you or not about the other person, he’s against him and if he doesn’t, he is against you. Avoid meddling in affairs unrelated to work, especially if they involve your manager.

No matter how badly you would like to talk to your manager about something which is bothering at the workplace, always choose not to. It is not worth it! You might end up undermining your position for future prospects and opportunities.

2. Depending too much on the manager to make all the decisions for you

Without any second thoughts, it is the job of your manager to adhere to your concerns and answer all your questions. However, you must rely on him only if the level of decision which needs to be made is above your pay grade. Your manager is already busy making a lot of decisions throughout the day, do not overburden him.

Your interaction with your manager should not be solely limited to queries and questions. Show your gratitude for his help, praise him for the work he does, and point out the positive things about your co-workers, particularly your team. Be a person who gives value and insight, not just an employee who needs answers.

3. Not following the instructions clearly

While performing a task, you are always handed over a clear set of instructions. If not, it is again your duty to ask for them so that you can avoid making mistakes. If you fail to follow what has been instructed to you, you might not only ruin the task but may even harm yourself as well.

6. Saying no to any task

Your boss didn’t hire a robot who would just follow the instructions and do whatever they are required to do. He hired you because you have knowledge and skills to speak up what you feel is right and should be done.

If your boss expects you to give your best to the company and even work on such projects which you do not believe in, do it anyway. Use your intellect to get the best out of them or present some inevitable alternatives.

7. Discussing your personal troubles and relationship issues with your manager

Irrespective of what you’re going through in your life, always put up a great show at work. No one deserves to or would even like to know about your troubles. It would just become another topic of gossip for them.

If your personal problems get in the way of your performance at work, your manager is going to take it in a very negative way. He will regard you as an immature and irresponsible worker who doesn’t know how to balance his personal life with the professional one.

8. Talking about your ongoing illness or mental health

There are conflicting opinions about whether one should share their mental health and other sicknesses at work or not. In the perfect world, we live in, people with imperfections are seldom welcomed. Your manager might regard your illness to be a hindrance in your productivity and this may go against you in plenty of ways.

Moreover, if you ever encounter an injury at work, there are chances that the insurance company might use this point against you to evade you from your rightful claim. It is always better to keep your weaknesses to yourself and not share them with the intent of gaining favor from your manager, because that might not happen.

9. Sharing your financial situation

There are high chances that your manager is already aware of your salary or has a definite idea about it. Despite this, it is not okay for you to talk about your financial situation openly and share your monetary concerns.

If you and your partner are doing well and this information reaches your boss, he might not consider you for the future raise. He will think that you don’t need the additional money since you are already making enough.

10. Whining about your work situation and career problems

Who doesn’t have troublesome coworkers? Do not express your dislike regarding the workplace environment or with the way your career is going in front of your manager, you can always discuss this in an appropriate manner like a one-on-one. Don’t refuse to work with someone because of your personal grudges. Nothing is more annoying for a manager.

All this doesn’t imply that your manager shouldn’t be talked to about anything. If you are facing some serious issues at work, for example, sexual harassment or personal injury while performing a corporate task, your manager should be the first person to know about them.

Let him know about your will and ability to bring out the best in any task for the betterment of the corporation.
