Tips to getting the Job

If you have decided it is time to move on from your current employment and are seeking a new job or position, what is the best way to go about it?

Technology has changed the job market just like it has affected most other things in our lives. Looking at the ‘situations vacant’ in the newspapers is no longer really a viable option and has become outdated.

Networking

Networking can be a great way to find a new job or career. Attending events related to your industry will let you make contacts that could be very useful in your job hunt.

You can network online as well. Such sites as LinkedIn give the chance to chat to people in the same line of business, and the more connections you have, the better.

Know your industry well so that you can chat to people with understanding. They will remember that when they are looking for a new employee, or if they hear of a job they think might be suitable.

They may even refer you to a company they know have vacancies, and some companies offer incentives if their existing employees can recommend someone.

A Total Change Of Scene

Some people are looking for more than just a change of job, they want a total change in their lives. This is when people start to consider working abroad, as there are some other countries that have great opportunities to advance in most industries.

You have to be aware of a different culture and different laws and regulations though and you should speak with an immigration attorney before you seriously consider this step.

You need to know what is and isn’t possible before you potentially waste time and money pursuing this avenue!

Employment Fairs

Employment fairs are often targeted at one particular profession, and that is wonderful if that is the one you work in. They will have many employers there that are seeking new workers who you can chat to for more information before you make a formal application.

Some fairs are more general, and this can give you the opportunity to look at jobs you had not considered. Skill sets usually apply to more than one type of job, and this is a way of finding out where else your skills could be used.

Bear in mind that many employment fairs are usually targeted for entry level positions so make sure you do proper research before attending anyone in your community to avoid wasting valuable time.

Agencies

Agencies act as a go-between for the employers and prospective employees, filtering out the people that would not be suitable. This can save employers a lot of time and is worth them paying the agency fees.

It works the other way as well. They will only show you jobs that they think you would be suited to, and often have positions that are not being advertised anywhere else. This can save you a lot of time and hassle, and make the search for a new job a lot easier.

Sometimes, they offer temp work as well, which can be a good way to get your foot in the door. It lets you and the employer see how you get on, and lets you test the job to see if you like it.

If you are ready to make the change in your job, start looking and making inquiries now. It can take a while to find exactly what you are after, but if you are not actively looking you could miss an ideal opportunity.
