Professional Change - Zinny Factor

Wanting a professional change is something that happens to everybody from time to time. You may have been in your current role only a few years. You may have been there for as long as you can remember. How long you’ve been there isn’t really important; what’s important is that when you know you want a professional change, you go for it.

A change in career can be tricky. It can scare you, and you might be plagued with thoughts of failure. Maybe you should just stick to your current role and accept it? Wrong!

Many people change careers multiple times in their life. It’s important you’re happy in your role. That you’re engaged. That you’re using your skills and that it’s something you’re passionate about. If your role is not encompassing these things, then you should probably look at making a change.

Here’s what to do if you want a professional change:

Don’t Overthink

The worst thing you can do is begin overthinking things. This can lead to paralysis and stop you from doing anything at all. Don’t think of this as leaving your current job to pursue or find your ‘life purpose’. You may need to change multiple times before you can feel that way about your job! Just go with your gut and take baby steps to get to where you want to be.

Take A Gradual Approach

The key to making any change is to take a gradual approach. You might begin taking evening courses to learn new skills and prepare you for a new role, for instance. You might look at the CPA exam process if you dream of becoming an accountant. You can map out a rough plan for how you’ll get to where you want to be so that you know you’re on track. However, you’ll want to remain flexible.

Whatever you do, break everything down into baby steps. Don’t look at it as one giant leap, or you’ll end up getting overwhelmed. This is why many people give up.

Make Sure Your Resume Is Just Right

Your resume should be just right if you’re going to start applying for new roles. Don’t let it get too long. You may be tempted to include absolutely everything, but you should only include what’s relevant. You can get a pro to help you if you aren’t sure how to make yours stand out. This is what is going to get you in the door!

Get Your Head In The Right Place

Your perspective and mindset can make a huge difference to how easy it is for you to change your profession. Work on reducing stress, looking on the bright side, and being positive no matter what. You might just find you have more opportunities this way!

Take Every Opportunity To Network

You never know who you might meet, so take every opportunity to network that you can. Go to events and practice. Build relationships and make connections.

Be Prepared To Start Over

Sometimes, a change means starting over. That doesn’t mean you’ve failed, though! It’s simply a necessary step to get to where you want to be.
