Laws protecting employees has improved dramatically over the past few years. This is brilliant. All employees deserve to work in a healthy and safe environment, out of the way of danger and harm.

It is also fair that you as an employer take all of the steps possible to ensure that your employees feel comfortable in the workplace without having to worry about danger.

However, sadly, many people take advantage of these laws and this has seen the rise of a compensation culture. Every year, more and more people are taking out false claims against their employers, or exaggerating the effects of certain situations on their personal health and well-being.

So, it’s time to start taking note of a few precautions that you can take as a small business owner in order to protect your own back.

Install CCTV

CCTV cameras can do so much more than merely pick up footage of shoplifters and thieves plundering wares. If they are installed in all (legal) areas of your commercial property, they monitor everything that goes on.

Their tape can provide valuable evidence if an employee makes a false claim regarding something like slips and trips in the workplace.

CCTV footage, for example, could prove that wet floor signs were put out following the clean up of a spill, or that someone fell in your store through nobody’s fault other than their own (for example, having an undone shoelace).

This could save you both a small fortune and your business’ reputation in the process of upholding justice.

Get Legal Advice

You should get legal advice regarding the suitability of your workplace and certain tasks for your employees before even taking staff on. This ensures that even your first staff members enter a safe and healthy working environment.

Legal experts can help you to conduct risk assessments and look over your commercial property to confirm that everything is up to standard. If an employee does raise or file a complaint of negligence or any other issue, you should consult employee legal advice again.

They will be able to offer you a clear and confident account of where you stand legally in the case and what you should do to rectify any situations as quickly, easily, and conflict-free as possible.

Keep Records

Before taking on any staff member, ensure to draw up a contract and terms of an agreement that comes hand in hand with taking on their given job role.

This should include details of any holiday pay, sick pay and other forms of paid leave. Every time you have any other form of meeting with any of your employees, keep records.

This can involve having someone write up a transcript of the conversation held, which both you and your employees can sign before leaving. This means that you have proof of all words exchanged at any given time when you are having a managerial conversation regarding terms of employment, warnings, or termination of roles with any staff member, as confirmed by all present.

Be organised and keep these in separate files for each employee, so that they can easily be accessed should any issues or disagreements arise.
