I remember learning another language at some point during my school years. I’m sure it’s the same for you too. It may have been incredibly hard to grasp as you sing the alphabet over and over again and told the class what you’d have love to do at the weekend.
However, learning a language is a useful skill and has helped many people get ahead in their careers. It is a useful skill to add to your CV as well as opening new doors and opportunities in your job.
Sometimes, I wish I took my international language classes more seriously. I speak another language but it’s not international, so it hasn’t really gotten me anywhere I’d say. I see how learning a new language has changed the lives of some people.
Here are some of the reasons why you should say yes to that French lesson from your boss.
International Companies Need Translators
If you look at any company which works on a global scale, they will have offices in locations all over the world. These will employ people who don’t speak a word of English. Head office will need to know what’s going on in other countries and even have meetings with foreign nationals to discuss projects.
It is of course essential in these cases that someone is able to accurately translate the language and relay the information back and forth between the director and the foreign worker. This is where you could come in handy if you a fluent in another language- and because of this you will be indispensable to the company.
Opening up New Doors
You will have all heard of English speakers going abroad to teach English through companies like Tower of english, but if you fluently speak another language you may be transferred to a different country to work alongside others.
This is a great opportunity for you if you love to travel and want to experience new things in life without losing your job security.
You’ll Build Confidence
Learning a language is incredibly difficult and can take years to really become fluent, but as you learn to speak another language and you can say phrases with ease; you’ll become much more confident in yourself.
Confidence is key for any employer, so you will be in line for a better chance of finding your dream job too.
Your English will Improve
It might sound a little backward that by learning a different language you will also improve your own, but when you start learning a new language you will also be taught the correct variations and situations where words are used, as well as using proper grammar in a sentence.
In turn, this can make you much more astute when speaking and writing your mother tongue.
You’ll be Able to Multi-task
Learning any new skill teaches us the value of independent learning and time management, but it also teaches us how to multi-task. The fact is that as you learn a new language you will be listening to the words, reading them, and then writing them down and repeating them out loud too.
This combined with the fact that you still have a full-time job to work at and a family to look after at home can mean that your brain is pulled in every direction. The more you get used to performing multiple tasks at one, the easier it will become and eventually your mind will be so used to it that it doesn’t even register.
I remember how interesting it was for me, learning my local language. It’s about time we make changes in our different career.
