I am not perfect. In fact, I am far from perfect. Previously, I was the queen of complaints. You can ask those who knew me well enough in the past. Now ask those who know me presently (because I need to exonerate myself). You need to ask them because I believe that I have improved positively.

Don’t get me wrong, I complain sometimes. I complain about how late I am running to a meeting especially when there is slight traffic. I complain during the morning rush when the subway is filled up and there are so much hassle and bustle. I complain when the bus is filled up in the morning and I may need to stand for a “few” minutes. I complain when I feel tired or a bit stressed out. I complain about how untidy my hair can be in the morning when I get up and need to hurry up for work.

There is only one person I know that hardly or close to never complains. I have so much respect for him because I really don’t know how he does it, and seriously I am working hard enough to get to that point where I barely need to complain about anything, no matter how peculiar the situation may seem.

Sometimes, you need to vent out frustration. It’s allowed, these things happen and people have different ways of venting. Some cry, others write, talk, exercise, and so on. Sometimes, you need to let out the energy that comes from frustration, but the question is; are you venting periodically or have you become a chronic complainer?

I have been fortunate enough to work in different industries and I notice how employees always find a way to complain about one thing or the other. Personally, I see it quite differently because since I have experienced something different in another company the so-called “challenge” these employees may be going through may be a leverage for me or something I appreciate and I am really grateful for.

What may be going through my mind is; “I have been in worse situations.” On the other hand, maybe they haven’t witnessed worse conditions and so fail to appreciate this beautiful one. Also, maybe I am seeing things differently because my last experience wasn’t as good or because the organization failed to consider this option.

I am not in any way saying that you shouldn’t speak up at work if you feel that the management isn’t handling issues correctly. But, complaining is totally different from speaking up. Complaining frequently messes with your psychological reasoning and mental well-being because you gradually fail to see possibilities. Your work-life then seems unchallenging and you fail to see how to progress at work because you are spending so much time nagging on the job.

I feel that every company has set of employees that complain (that seems to be the unfortunate truth but I may be wrong). No matter how well some employers try to create a positive culture, some employees still just complain! I know I said that I complain but the truth is that once you start complaining about your job regularly then that becomes an issue because you may most likely end up feeling miserable on the job.

If your job is miserable enough that you have to complain, I think it’s time for you to change jobs, and if you are not ready to change jobs, then why complain?

I felt the need to discuss this topic because I am speaking from experience and I love to share ways I have developed and opened my mind to positive reasoning because it is essential for our work-lives.

If you think that you need to change your work-life perception and ditch the constant complaints, or at least reduce it because Rome wasn’t built in a day, then this article is for you. I am not here to cajole you, it’s a personal decision to decide, whether or not, you need to stop complaining about your job.

complain

1. If you can’t change it, why complain?

There are just somethings that we can’t change. So when I am starting to complain of how filled up the bus or subway is in the morning I pause and say to myself; “Zinny, are you by any chance saying these students, fellow workers, and parents taking their children to the daycare should sit at home and wait for you to use the transport system first, before they can leave?”.

The answer is plain simple, no! If I can’t change it, then I have to deal with it. There is absolutely no reason for me to kill myself with thoughts and feel uncheerful on the ride then subsequently take such negative feeling to work and have a total distasteful day all because I spent a few minutes complaining my soul away.

2. Don’t complain about secondary things that revolve around your job

Depending on the type of job you do or the industry you are in, there may be no need to complain about a few things. For example, if you need to be at work for 9am everyday, it’s high time you stopped complaining about waking up early.

You should rather figure out a way to plan your schedule so that you can rest well enough before the next day. Maybe think of ways to handle your meal planning. Try to have enough rest before the next day. Possibly speak to your boss and incorporate flexibility (many cultures differ, but if this is available to you, then take advantage of it.)

3. Misery loves company

Often times when other co-workers start to complain, they look for someone who is ready to whine with them. You can choose to leave the circle or you can opt to remain there and complain. It’s your sole decision.

You may also feel the urge to complain. Sometimes, it may seem inevitable, but from a positive stand point you can choose to not talk to someone about it. The moment you decide to look for a complain partner then several other issues may arise out of the first, giving you more reasons to complain of how terrible your work or employer is.

4. Positive energy

I have previously discussed on how to stay positive and mean it. You should read the post because it has a lot of detailed information. However, if you are able to surround yourself with positive minded individuals the next thing is for you to willingly strive to change your attitude. So if you are corrected and told that you are complaining about something, you should admit your wrong and work to become a better person. Admit. This is really important because once you can tell that you need improvement that is really a right step in the right direction.

I am consistently striving to complain less and live a more positive life because it will inevitably affect my work-life in the long run. Are you in? If you have been working on complaining less, how has this been for you? How have you been able to do this? I would really love to hear from you.
