Lynda Omerekpe - Cash Your Passion - Zinny Factor

Discovering your passion is something that can be so difficult to figure out and I know because I’ve been in such situation. Learning how to earn an income from your passion is another thing that gives many a headache.

However, as the year moves forward, I’ll be providing you with tips, tricks and so much more that can help make this easy to navigate.

I’m so excited to have partnered with Lynda not only because she’s someone I admire and know to be very hardworking and passionate about her career and personal goals, but also because this is an area of work that interests me. It’s always exciting to know someone whose goals align with mine!

Lynda currently works with Heritage Bank in Lagos, Nigeria where she handles digital and multimedia management. Her role involves directing all aspects of digital marketing activity; managing and facilitating brand activities on the bank’s digital & multimedia platforms; providing competitor digital activity intelligence report to help improve marketing and branding objectives; designing and implementing social media strategy to align with business goals.

Cash Your Passion - Lynda Omerekpe Issue 8

Cash your passion!

As an entrepreneur, Lynda wears 2 caps as a digital marketing strategist and writer/ author. She runs a digital enterprise that offers freelance writing, copywriting, and digital marketing services.

She is also the author of the book: Cash Your Passion. This book speaks to three different types of people: unemployed graduates, the unemployed adult who has lost his/her job and employed people who are working in an organization where they have a passion for their job.

The great news is that 2 lucky readers will have the opportunity to win her book which will ultimately help you learn how to cash your passion and practical steps to making money from the things you love doing. Excited much?

I want you to find out more about Lynda, what it feels like to be an employee and entrepreneur, why she went ahead to write this book, and so much more.

“Hmmn….. where do I begin? Okay, let’s start from the morning; my alarm goes off at 4:30 AM and because I just slept about an hour ago, I quickly hit the snooze button and sometimes just turn it off and go back to sleep.

My body officially wakes up between 5:30 AM & 6: 00 AM. It takes me about 30 minutes to get ready (that’s if I don’t have a complicated hairstyle that needs time to get styled…lol). Next agenda is to battle the heated early morning Lagos traffic, but thank God, my office is about 20-25 minutes drive from home. Work officially starts at 8:00 AM.

The first thing I do when I turn on my computer is to check the bank’s social media platforms and the social monitoring tools. Afterwards, I get into my regular routine for the day. Work closes between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM except I have a deadline to meet which keeps me longer.

After work, I drive home; find something to eat, take a shower and get some rest – I try to sleep between 9:30 PM/10:00 PM so my brain cells and body can rest before I slide into the entrepreneur mode. From 12:30/1:00 AM, my body wakes me up to pursue passion – I work on Lynnville Consulting and my writings till about 3/3:30 AM and then force myself to sleep.

Being in my shoes feels great especially because my job is a total package of the things I love doing. So whether I’m working as an employee or an entrepreneur, I’m doing something that makes me happy.

On the flip-side, it requires a lot of persistence, perseverance and passion; you also have to be determined and resilient to keep pushing through the giant hurdles that will come your way.”

Lynda Omerekpe - - Cash Your Passion - Zinny Factor

Lynda loves what she does during the day and at night. You can definitely see it!

“The things I love most about what I do is that it expands my scope of business acumen and broadens my perspective about life. As a digital marketing strategist, I’m exposed to different sectors and types of businesses that need my help.

To do this effectively, I have to understand the nature of their business and also the business objectives. This means I will do a research into the client’s business, their competitors, market trends and their target audience.

I’ve had the privilege of being exposed to the world of real estate, fashion, health & wellness, food industry, recruitment & outsourcing, communications, etc.

Secondly, I love the exposure it gives me and the opportunity to meet new people which helps to expand my network. Lastly, there’s never a boring moment with my job. It keeps me challenged because as the digital trends evolve, I have to stay updated with latest processes & improved technology.

Everyday to me is memorable because there is always something exciting in what I do.”

By now I’m sure you are wondering why she decided to become an entrepreneur or why she has decided to work during the day as an employee. As expected, there’s always a story on why people do certain things and she was kind enough to share.
“Yes, there is a story but I’ll make it short. I became an entrepreneur because I have always wanted to have multiple streams of income. I was on social media one day while scrolling through the timeline, I saw 3 quotes and these words pierced through my bone marrow.
  1. There are 365 days in a year and some people only receive credit alerts in 12 days (this one pained me).
  2. Build your dreams or someone else will employ you to build theirs.
  3. Don’t work for someone for a whole day and go home without spending at least 1 hour to invest in your dreams.

Secondly, I said a prayer when I was 21. I asked God to make me his outstretched arm to the world. What this means is that, when people need something from God, I will be one of his children who he will send to help that person in need.

I knew my salary will not be the only source to help bring this prayer to reality, so I made up my mind that whatever type of employment I have, I will always have chains of businesses that will help me reach out to others.

I believe you cannot be a success until you make a positive impact in the lives of others (at least 1 person). The awesome thing about this is that when you’re in partnership with God, he ALWAYS sorts you out.”

I particularly loved her response because I’ve also wanted to have multiple streams of income since I can last remember. Also, it can be so worrisome when you aren’t too sure about how to go about turning your passion into a way of income.

What inspired her to write “Cash Your Passion” and why should you enter this giveaway or buy this book, you ask?

“Every year, the level of unemployment in Nigeria increases because there are not enough jobs to accommodate the graduates that are churned into the workforce every year. Also, unforeseen redundancy affected so many people (over 1.5 million in 2016) who were thrown into severe financial difficulties because they couldn’t find a job.

Situations such as this makes my heart heavy because within these 2 categories of people is an untapped potential that needs to be maximized.

I wrote Cash Your Passion to give HOPE to people who have lost all hope of earning a living. Cash Your Passion is a reawakening and wake-up call to everyone to STOP waiting for someone to save you, be your own hero  use your talents, gifts, and passion to create a valuable product/service that will bring in cash (money).”

This is such a perfect timing giving that I also recently collaborated with Futurpreneur Canada on a Work is Changing project. You can read articles and watch the video (below) on how the changing world of work will affect unemployment. Also, note that this book will be beneficial to anyone in any location.

She shares some advice for anyone who has a 9-5 but also wants to start a side-hustle:
“Chapter 4 of my book CASH YOUR PASSION gives an extensive explanation on how to handle employment and entrepreneurship.
I’ll share few briefly; you must create valuable time for your passion, and make sure it doesn’t clash with time dedicated to your job. It is important that you understand your activity levels and plan your time effectively.
As an employee, don’t play with all your vacation time. Take a short course, read a book, go for a seminar to grow your passion.”

Favourite movie?

“I think it will be “Coming to America”. I like the movie because a part of it speaks to me (the character Akeem). The fact that he didn’t want to be recognised as the prince of Zamunda; he brought himself low so he could relate with others, live a normal life and also learn new things. I liked his humility & willingness to serve.”
