Effective Communication is an important interpersonal skill that can be executed through verbal or nonverbal means. It is important for the actualization of organizational objectives  and only takes place when the listener clearly understands the message that the speaker intended to send.

Some companies spend a lot of money to train its employees on effective communication so as to derive a huge return on investment “ROI” from it because it is beneficial to organizations, its employees and clients/ customers.

However, I believe that since as individuals we stand to benefit from effective communication, it will also be good to self-develop prior to such training. In this article, I will discuss the advantages of effective communication and what you stand to benefit from it.

  1. Team Building/ Efficiency

Effective communication helps in building teams because team members will better understand each other and work solely towards achieving its goals. There will be less competition and improved productivity.

When information is better understood, parties become aware of their responsibilities and this saves a lot of time, prevents any form of conflict or bickering and builds trust.

This is why it is very common to be asked questions relating to how well you can work in a team during a job interview. It also improves efficiency within the workplace since it creates the feeling of a sense of involvement.

  1. Confidence

Take a minute to think of this. Will you not be much more confident at work if you have an effective way of communicating?  It will also motivate you into making a large input to your organization’s objectives which will, in turn, make you an asset.

Understandably, the minute you discover that you have a sense of belonging and good communication in your workplace you will become much more relaxed and have higher self-esteem.

  1. Bridges the gap of diversity

If you learn to effectively communicate at your workplace there will be no need to feel insecure with regards to cultural differences at your workplace because you will adequately understand what is expected of you.

It can be difficult to adjust to a new culture or environment because of several differences you will be exposed to. However, effective communication helps address this issue and reduces the stress that may arise from diversity. It prevents miscommunication and improves productivity.

Effectively communicated messages promote peace within the work environment as there will be understanding between colleagues. To have a healthy work atmosphere, good communication skills become indispensable. There will be perceived trust, honesty and clear understanding of information.

With the development of technology, there is the increased need for globalization. Effective communication helps meet the demands that may arise from globalization. It is important to understand how to relate with your company’s international counterparts. It will help you understand languages that should be used, timing, and proper writing patterns.   

  1. Self Improvement

It is obvious that with these benefits, it will only lead to self-development and continued growth. Career growth is also expected once you are able to master the intricacies of effective communication.
