As the saying goes, you should work to live rather than live to work. This is a fundamental philosophy that, no matter what job you are doing, should be a basis for how you approach your working life.

Work is good, beneficial, and enriches you, but your focus should always be on making the most of your entire life on a holistic level. Work is part of the picture; not the only object in the frame.

One of the most important factors you have to consider is your health. This is a well-known fact, but the term “health” is somewhat obtuse. Good health takes many different factors into consideration. Let’s explore these in more depth, so you can be sure you are taking care of the entire health spectrum.

Mental Health

Mental health is an important area when it comes to work. There’s no doubt that most jobs involve some element of stress; you have to meet deadlines, finish projects, and are responsible for your duties being performed in the best manner possible.

Stress may be inevitable when it comes to your working life, but that doesn’t mean this stress has to encroach onto the rest of your life.

It’s important to take time to decompress from work and transition back into “non-work you”. Taking 15 minutes at the end of your working day to tidy your thoughts can be hugely beneficial. Make notes about things you have to do the next day; jot down a list of the things you have accomplished already; and then transition back into your normal self.

This technique is known as compartmentalisation, and you will find it helps to control working stress incredibly effectively.

Physical Health

There are many jobs that can take a toll on your physical health. Office and desk jobs can cause issues with your posture and repetitive strain concerns. More physical construction jobs have the potential to cause even larger issues. Even if you work from home on a laptop, you can develop issues with your wrists due to excessive typing.

When it comes to preserving your physical health, the best thing you can do is be proactive. If you start to notice aches and pains after a day of work, visit a physiotherapist or Chiropractor to help work the issue out.

If you type a lot, then any numbness in your hands and fingers is a warning sign that your nerves may be struggling to cope. If you take action on physical health ailments as soon as they present, you can be confident the problem does not become chronic.

Emotional Health

Your emotional health is how you feel; how you react to situations; and the mood you experience during the working day.

For the most part, emotional health should be dealt with in the same way as physical health– by being proactive. If you notice you are experiencing a low mood during the working day, or are more anxious than usual, then seek to address this issue head on.

Therapy is beneficial, as is good self-care; these techniques can not only correct any problems you are currently experiencing, but also help to maintain good emotional health in the future. Hopefully, by focusing on each aspect of your health, you can be confident that your work will be nothing but beneficial to the overall picture of your life.
